New Delhi: Ahead of his visit to Somnath on January 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on the enduring spiritual and cultural significance of the Somnath Temple, stating that repeated attacks on the shrine over centuries ultimately strengthened India’s cultural unity rather than weakening it. He shared these thoughts as the Somnath Swabhiman Parv began, marking a millennium since the first recorded attack on the temple in January 1026.
The Prime Minister recalled that despite facing multiple assaults through history, the Somnath Temple continued to rise again, symbolising the unbroken faith and determination of the Indian people. He noted that such challenges failed to erode spiritual resolve and instead deepened a shared sense of cultural identity and unity. According to him, the repeated reconstruction of the temple stands as a testament to collective resilience and civilisational continuity.
Describing the Somnath Swabhiman Parv as a festival of remembrance, Prime Minister Modi said the event honours countless individuals who stood firm in their values during difficult and uncertain times. He emphasised that their commitment to India’s civilisation and cultural consciousness never wavered, regardless of the scale of adversity they faced. This legacy, he said, continues to inspire efforts toward strengthening national unity and social cohesion.
The Prime Minister also revisited memories from a major programme held at Somnath on October 31, 2001, which marked 50 years since the temple’s reconstruction and inauguration in 1951. He recalled that the historic 1951 ceremony took place in the presence of the country’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, and acknowledged the pivotal role played by leaders such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and K M Munshi in rebuilding the shrine after Independence.
He further noted that the 2001 commemorative event saw the participation of several national leaders, reflecting the broad national significance attached to Somnath. Looking ahead, he pointed out that 2026 will also mark 75 years since the temple’s grand inauguration in 1951.
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv is being observed from January 8 to January 11, featuring a series of programmes focused on India’s spiritual heritage, cultural pride, and enduring social values.
