New Delhi: As Team India prepares to take on England in a crucial five-match Test series starting June 20 in Leeds, all eyes are on a new-look Indian side. With stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from Test cricket, this series marks the dawn of a new era, led by the young and talented Shubman Gill. The upcoming matches also kick off India’s campaign in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
In the lead-up to the high-stakes series, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has issued a clear message to Gill, focusing particularly on the importance of managing Jasprit Bumrah smartly. Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly emphasized that while Bumrah is India’s biggest weapon, overusing him could be costly.
“Bumrah is your man. You can’t keep bowling him endlessly,” Ganguly warned. “Shubman Gill must understand this. Use him as a strike bowler, a wicket-taker—not as a workhorse. Limit his workload to 12 overs a day. Let the others step up. If India can preserve Bumrah and use him effectively, they have a real chance.”
Recognizing England’s advantage in home conditions, Ganguly added that India’s chances hinge on two key factors—solid batting and intelligent use of Bumrah.
“England are tough to beat at home. But if India bat well, bat tough, and use Bumrah properly, they’re very much in the game,” he said. “I’ll be watching at Edgbaston or Lord’s—I truly believe this team has potential.”
Ganguly also didn’t shy away from placing expectations on Gill—not just as a captain, but as a frontline batter.
“Shubman still has work to do as a Test batter. These English conditions are challenging, and he needs to deliver runs,” Ganguly said. “But he’s young and learning. If he performs well, imagine the impact—it would make him a national hero. These are the moments you live for as a player.”
With a young core and a fresh leadership group, India’s upcoming series in England is more than just a contest—it’s a test of character, adaptability, and ambition.
