MARGAO: South Goa has reported a significant reduction in road accidents this year, with official data showing 72 fewer crashes than last year — an 8.22% decline. Fatalities have also decreased, with 19 fewer fatal accidents and 22 fewer deaths recorded, signalling progress in the district’s road safety efforts.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), South Goa, Rajendra Prabhu Dessai, attributed the positive trend to intensified monitoring and targeted enforcement in accident-prone zones.
He said that stringent checks and tougher penalties against high-risk driving practices have helped improve road discipline. Offences such as overspeeding, drunk driving, helmetless riding and failure to use seat belts remain major concerns, but increased crackdowns have enhanced compliance and contributed to safer travel conditions across the district.
Authorities believe the combination of awareness campaigns and enforcement measures is gradually reshaping driver behaviour, leading to fewer accidents and lives lost on South Goa’s roads.
