MARGAO: Licensed taxi operators from South Goa have lodged a strong protest with the Superintendent of Police, South Goa, alleging escalating harassment by groups of local drivers at several key tourist locations in the state. In a memorandum submitted on Thursday, the operators claimed that over the past week they have repeatedly been confronted by groups of local drivers who, without any legal authority, demand to check PSV badges, taxi meters and booking details, and even force them to vacate spots where they halt briefly for meals or rest. The operators said such incidents occurred at Nanu Resort in Varca, Calangute, Baga and most recently at Palolem on September 17, when a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted. A formal complaint in connection with the Palolem assault has already been filed at Canacona Police Station.
Terming the harassment as systematic and alarming, the memorandum urged police to take strict action against those responsible, to prevent unauthorized interference in the lawful functioning of taxis, and to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers. The operators also demanded a thorough verification of PSV badges and permits, pointing out that many illegal operators continue to ply freely while law-abiding drivers with proper documentation face constant intimidation. They warned that the unchecked harassment of genuine taxi operators not only threatens their livelihood but also risks damaging Goa’s image as a tourist-friendly state.
