MARGAO: Even as the crime rate is at an all-time high in South Goa, the South Goa Superintendent of police paints a rosy picture claiming all is under control.
Despite the rape, murders, theft, Gambling, drugs reported almost every day, the SP says the police has detected every case in South Goa.
“Some sections of the print media have carried a story that is misleading in nature regarding police action in Salcete. We would like to share a few insights and assure the people that all efforts are being made to ensure the safety of the people and reduce the occurrence of crimes,” said Pankaj Kumar Singh, IPS Sr Superintendent of Police (South), in a press statement issued here.
He said that in recent months several cases of chain snatching have been reported across the state; of these, 6 cases were reported in the Salcete area.
“All the 6 cases of Salcete and 4 cases from North Goa were immediately detected after extensive interrogation of the accused persons,” he says. He said these chain snatchers were part of an interstate gang who would commit chain snatching and then go into hiding.
The SP says adding to the difficulties, the accused often use masks and helmets to conceal their identity while committing the offences.
“In spite of all such challenges, a joint team of police officers from Salcete worked relentlessly and arrested the accused Mohammad Sarfaraz and Ajay Bhogulkar,” he said.
The SP says Salcete currently enjoys a 100% detection rate for chain snatching offences reported after a highly commendable joint operation conducted by Salcete police.
“Snatched gold weighing 182gms worth approximately 8 lakh Rupees has been recovered. Additionally, there were 2 cases of mobile snatching reported in the jurisdiction of Salcete, and both these cases have been detected. “There have been 83 cases of Gambling reported in the Salcete area. All 83 cases have been detected, and the culprits organizing these Gambling activities have been arrested and charged under the provisions of the Goa Public Gambling Act,” he said.

He says the Crime against women and children are taken very seriously by police, and all cases are diligently investigated under the guidance of superiors.

Day and night patrols have been intensified, the beat system has been revived and improved, and suitable instructions have been given to staff and officers working under each beats,” he said.
