Hubballi: Plans are underway to introduce special trains between Vasco da Gama and Velankanni to make it easier for devotees from Goa to attend the annual novenas and feast at the Velankanni shrine later this year.
The proposal was discussed at the 38th meeting of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) of Hubballi Division, held on June 20 at the Chief Workshop Manager’s Office. The meeting was chaired by Divisional Railway Manager Smt. Bela Meena and attended by 13 committee members, including Shri Augusto M. Da Costa, who represented South Goa MP Capt. Viriato Fernandes.
During the discussions, Shri Da Costa requested that special trains be operated between August 27 and September 8, giving pilgrims ample time to plan their journey. He emphasised the need for advance announcements, suggesting that schedules be issued at least a month ahead.
Committee members agreed that running special trains on this route was operationally feasible. A formal proposal will now be sent to the Chief Passenger Traffic Manager of South Western Railway to arrange three trips between Vasco and Velankanni, subject to approval of dates and timings by the Divisional Railway Manager.
Another issue raised was the weekly Vasco–Velankanni train that departs every Monday but often arrives late, leaving devotees with little time for their pilgrimage. It was suggested that the train remain at Velankanni station for an extra day to allow passengers more time at the shrine. The DRM assured the committee that this request would be included in the agenda for the next meeting.
