Vasco: Biswa Darjee scored the winner as Sporting Clube de Goa edged past Calangute Association 1-0 in the Goa Professional League at Tilak Maidan, here, Tuesday.
Man-of-the-Match Biswa scored in the 29th minute as Sporting moved third in the standings with 43 points from 22 games. They have two more games left to play and can catch up with league leaders Sesa FA who have 45 points and a match in hand. Second-placed Pax of Nagoa SC have 44 points from 23 games.
Both the teams started aggressively in search of the opener.
Calangute had the first go but Sporting goalkeeper Abhimanyu Singh, who saved a last-minute penalty against Churchill Bros FC in the previous 1-0 win, continued with his good form and denied Calangute’s Jovito Fernandes.
The Flaming Oranje slowly worked their way back into the game and broke the deadlock in the 29th minute.
Kunal Kundaikar sent in a deadly cross and Jonas Colaco played the ball immediately for Biswa Darjee for an easy tap in at the far post.
In the second half, Calangute made their intentions clear. Richard Cardoz saw his fierce grounder miss the target narrowly while substitute Kirtikesh Gadekar’s powerful effort deflected off a Sporting player and went out for an abortive corner.
In the final minutes, Sporting had two good chances but Ivon Costa and Joyson Gauncar lacked sharpness.
