VADDEM: In a heartwarming display of unity and tradition, the principal, teachers, and students of St Andrews Higher Secondary School in Vasco took part in the vibrant Sao Joao celebrations at Vaddem on Tuesday morning.
The festive spirit took over the area as locals were pleasantly surprised to witness the strong bond shared between students and staff, who danced and celebrated together with joy and enthusiasm. The celebration, held near the Vaddem lake adjacent to the school, was marked by colourful traditions, with participants donning floral and fruit-laden koppels (headgear) and singing traditional Sao Joao songs while chanting “Viva Re Sao Joao.”
In a lively procession, the school group circled the lake, dancing in lines to festive music. Many also gathered to take group photographs with the school in the backdrop, capturing the essence of a celebration rooted in Goan heritage. Traditional Goan delicacies were also part of the celebration, adding to the festive flavour.
Speaking to media, Dr Elvis Gonsalves, Principal of St Andrews HSS, emphasized the school’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and communal harmony.
“We believe in celebrating all festivals, whether it is Eid, Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Christmas, or Sao Joao. Our student community includes Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, and our aim is to foster respect for all religions and encourage unity through shared celebrations,” said Dr Gonsalves.
The initiative was lauded by many as a fine example of education beyond textbooks—one that nurtures cultural awareness, inclusivity, and social bonding.
