Panaji: St. Anthony SC Assolda sealed their place in the final of the 52nd Custodio Memorial Football Tournament with a thrilling 2-1 win over hosts Raia Sporting Club in the first semifinal, held at the Raia Panchayat Ground. Organized by the Raia Sporting Association, the match drew a crowd of over 3,000 spectators who braved heavy rain to witness a high-intensity clash between two title favourites.
The game started with early opportunities at both ends. In the 4th minute, St. Anthony’s Sunny Fernandes came close to scoring but missed narrowly. Raia SC replied swiftly, with Joyson Gauncar’s 7th-minute attempt going over the bar. Velito Cruz of Raia SC also tested the Assolda goalkeeper, who was equal to the challenge.
The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute when Sheldon Pexito netted for St. Anthony SC Assolda, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Assolda side then tightened their midfield control, limiting Raia’s attacking options and holding their advantage into the second half.
Raia SC managed to equalize in the 65th minute through Joyson Gauncar, whose goal revived the hopes of the home crowd. However, just four minutes later, Frazer Gomes scored what would be the match-winner in the 69th minute, putting Assolda ahead 2-1.
MMC Councillor Johny Crasto, who was the chief guest for the match, presented the Man of the Match award to Frazer Gomes for his decisive contribution. With this victory, St. Anthony SC Assolda march into the final, keeping their title hopes alive in the prestigious tournament.
