PORVORIM: The State government has mandated that all of its departments and educational establishments respond in Konkani or Marathi whenever correspondence is received in those languages.
In a circular, Director of Official Language Prashant Shirodkar informed the department heads that, in accordance with the Official Language Act of 1987, the Goan government designated December 19, 1987, as the date on which the Konkani language would become the official language for government responses to communications received in Konkani, while Marathi would be used for replies.
“In this regard, all the Heads of Departments/Offices/Directorates /Educational Institutions /Government Agencies/Autonomous Bodies/Companies and Societies formed by the Government of Goa or receiving 100% Government Grants shall ensure that whenever correspondence are received in Konkani or Marathi language, replies is to be given in the respective language,” Shirodkar stated.
