New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, alleging large-scale irregularities in the distribution of flood relief funds in Malda district. Citing a detailed Comptroller and Auditor General report submitted to the Calcutta High Court, the BJP claimed the findings point to a possible scam worth nearly Rs 100 crore.
According to the BJP, the extensive audit report highlights serious lapses in the allocation of relief money meant for flood-affected residents. The party alleged that genuine beneficiaries were denied assistance, while influential individuals linked to the ruling establishment unlawfully accessed funds. It described the alleged irregularities as a systematic misuse of public money rather than isolated administrative errors.
One of the key allegations revolves around multiple payments being credited to the same individuals. The BJP claimed that nearly 7,000 people received flood relief more than once, with some accounts showing repeated transactions ranging from two to over 40 payments. In one instance cited from the Harishchandrapur-2 block, a single individual is alleged to have received relief funds dozens of times.
The party further alleged that substantial amounts were sanctioned for damage to permanent houses, despite official records reportedly indicating that no such houses were affected by floods in the district. It also claimed that more than a hundred public representatives and government employees, including those drawing regular salaries, received benefits meant exclusively for economically weaker sections.
Additional allegations include payments made to individuals who never applied for flood relief, as well as missing records from block offices. The BJP argued that the disappearance of files raises concerns about attempts to conceal evidence and obstruct accountability.
Targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the BJP accused the ruling party of double standards, claiming that while the government speaks of welfare and deprivation, relief funds meant for the poor were misused. The party described the alleged scam as a major betrayal of flood-hit families and demanded strict action against those responsible.
The BJP said the issue would become a major political flashpoint ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, asserting that the alleged misuse of relief funds reflects deeper problems in governance and financial oversight in the state.
