VASCO: The silver umbrella recovered from an abandoned bag at Vasco Railway Station on Tuesday evening has been identified as a stolen religious artifact from the Sai Baba Temple in Karwar.
Karnataka Police confirmed on Wednesday that the 6.4 kg silver “Chattra” (traditional umbrella), valued at ₹5,37,600, was stolen from the temple premises. Following the identification, a team from the Karwar Police arrived in Vasco to initiate formal procedures for its recovery and to take forward the investigation.
It may be recalled that the item was discovered during routine patrolling around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday by Vasco Railway Police Station staff, including PI Anand Shirodkar, PI Amarnath Passi, PSI Krishna Talpi, and RPF official Rohit Dixit. The team noticed an unattended bag wrapped in a bedsheet and, upon inspection, found a white metal object that resembled silver.
To verify the object’s authenticity, assistance was sought from Shagun Jewellers, who confirmed that it was a silver umbrella with 87.50% purity. The object was then formally secured under a panchanama as per Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, 2023.
Following the recovery, the Vasco Railway Police had flashed a wireless alert to all police stations. It was through this alert that the Karnataka Police were able to identify the item as the one stolen from the Karwar temple.
