New Delhi: The recent deportation of Indian nationals by the United States has ignited a fierce debate over the treatment of deportees, particularly concerning the use of shackles. This issue has not only sparked a nationwide outcry in India but has also prompted the government to intervene, ensuring that deportees are treated humanely. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized the need for a strong crackdown on illegal migration while ensuring that deportees are not mistreated. This stance reflects India’s commitment to protecting its citizens’ rights while addressing the complexities of illegal immigration.
In the wake of these developments, India has strongly expressed its concerns to the US regarding the treatment of deportees on a flight that landed on February 5. The primary focus of these concerns was the use of shackles, especially on women. This incident marked the first large-scale deportation under the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, involving 104 Indian nationals. The US Standard Operating Procedure for deportations, effective since 2012, allows the use of restraints for security reasons, although it generally exempts women and minors. However, the final decision rests with the flight officer in charge.
Subsequent flights on February 15 and 16 saw no women or children restrained, as confirmed by both US authorities and Indian agencies after interviewing the deportees upon their arrival. India has also emphasized the need to accommodate the religious sensitivities and food preferences of deportees, ensuring that their rights are respected during the deportation process. The Ministry of External Affairs remains engaged with the US to ensure humane treatment during deportations, reflecting a broader commitment to protecting the dignity of Indian nationals abroad.
