PANAJI: Chandrashekar Lamani, a 35-year-old tempo traveler driver who is suspected of raping an engineering college student on Christmas Day in 2022, has been denied bail by the Additional Sessions Court, which ruled that the seriousness of the crime and the accused’s moral responsibility justify his ongoing incarceration.
Additional Sessions Judge Apurva Nagvenkar stated in the ruling that while the young victim might have made a mistake by being inebriated, she did not foresee the heinous crime.
The victim is a young college student who may have erred by drinking wine knowing that she might become inebriated, but she did not foresee that she would be the target of such a horrible crime when her fellow students and the tempo traveler’s driver were there.
However, the accused is not a young person who was unaware of the repercussions of his unlawful behavior,” the Court noted, adding,
“There is moral turpitude on the surface because the accused had a duty to protect and care for the three defenseless students who were intoxicated and not in their senses.”
The judge added that it would be premature to issue bail to the accused at this time because the victim has not yet been evaluated. Two of the 32 witnesses named in the chargesheet have already been questioned by the prosecution.
