BENAULIM: The shores of Benaulim came alive with tradition, learning and gratitude on January 17, 2025, as noted fisherman leader Pele invited 80 students from Loyola High School, Margao, to experience the age-old practice of pulling a traditional rampon fishing net.
For Pele, the initiative was more than a fishing activity. Sharing his emotions with the students, he described the programme as a gift to the next generation, aimed at preserving Goa’s traditional way of life, instilling respect for the sea and reinforcing the values of community bonding and solidarity.
Fr. Anand D’Souza, Headmaster of Loyola High School, Margao, strongly supported the initiative, emphasising the importance of hands-on, field-based learning rooted in Goan ethos, culture and heritage. Teachers Ingrid Fernandes and Wilson Fernandes accompanied the students, guiding them through the experience as learning extended beyond classrooms to the sandy shores and rhythmic waves of Benaulim beach.
The Guest of Honour, Captain of Ports Shri Octavio A. Rodrigues, inspired the students with his interaction and words of encouragement. He assured students aspiring for careers in the marine and maritime sector of his support, helping them explore professional opportunities linked to the sea that is an integral part of Goan life.
Special appreciation was extended to Fr. Jimmy, who coordinated the programme with dedication, and to Hypatia Media, which designed the event in alignment with the New Education Policy of the Government of India, focusing on vocational education and experiential learning.
Adding depth to the programme, Dr. Hariharan Chandra Shekhar, a prominent voice in urban sustainability and water conservation and head of the Altech Foundation, addressed the students on the value of water and environmental responsibility. Speaking against the backdrop of the sea, his message on conserving every drop and respecting nature left a lasting impression.
Zeeshan, head of Hypatia Media, said that in collaboration with Pele, plans are underway to involve more schools in the future, enabling more students to experience a unique learning platform where education meets tradition and real-life experiences.
On the shores of Benaulim, the students not only helped pull a fishing net but also absorbed stories, values and memories that are likely to remain with them for a lifetime.
