New Delhi: India’s golden run in Javelin Throw continued at the World Para Athletics Championships as star athlete Sumit Antil clinched his third consecutive world title with a record-breaking throw of 71.37m at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The two-time Paralympic champion, already assured of gold after three throws beyond 65m, unleashed his best in the fifth round to set a new meet record, according to the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Antil had previously won world titles in Paris 2023 (world record 70.83m) and Kobe 2024 (69.50m), making him the most successful Indian in the competition’s history.
Adding to the home crowd’s delight, Sandip Singh Sargar claimed the F44 Javelin Throw gold, leading a 1–2 finish for India. His decisive throw of 62.82m edged past compatriot Sandeep, who won silver with 62.68m. Pushpendra Singh (F43) registered a season-best 61.94m but missed out on the podium. Brazil’s Edenilson Roberto took bronze with a F42 world record throw of 62.36m.
Beyond India’s triumphs, the championships witnessed several standout performances. Australia’s Vanessa Low secured her third long jump world crown with a T61 record leap of 5.49m, while Poland’s Magdalena Andruszkiewicz shattered the women’s T72 100m world record in 16.82s. Brazil’s Ricardo Gomes de Mendonca completed a sprint double by adding the T37 200m gold to his 100m title, and Ireland’s Orla Comerford sealed the T13 sprint double.
A Greek thrower also set a new world record in the F62 Javelin with a distance of 35.08m.
At the end of the day, Brazil topped the medal standings with 7 gold, 14 silver and 6 bronze, followed by Poland (6-1-5) and China (5-7-4). India rose to fourth place (4-4-1), powered by Antil and Sargar’s twin javelin golds.
