VASCO: South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes on Sunday appealed to all the political parties to unite in the fight against Sunburn
Speaking to reporters after a felicitation program in Chicalim, Fernandes said that Sunburn was a drug festival and not a part of Goan culture.
“The people from South Goa will have to wear boxing gloves now and we will not allow South Goa to get spoilt. The people of North Goa gave a good fight to the Sunburn event last year and we will now give support to save Goa for future generations. The Sunburn is a drug festival where people dance for three to four days under the influence of drugs and this is not our Goan culture,” he said.
Fernandes added, “I especially appeal to the BJP Karyakartas to support us in this fight and I also appeal to everyone from all the political parties to unite with us, regardless of political party affiliation as Goans. These organisers have finished North Goa and now they want to spoil South Goa and we will have to get together to stop this Sunburn Festival. The recent statements making South Goa the venue is with the support of politicians to see our reactions. The people of South Goa will not stay quiet and we will expose the people involved with the organisers. These outsiders took our lands and now want to steal our culture which will never be allowed,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes said that some police officers were hand in glove with the drug mafia.
“Our culture is our foundation and we have values as Goans. Drugs are spreading fast in Goa and shockingly at school levels. We can see across schools in the entire Goa where people dressed in Suits are offering children and students chocolates and gifts laced with small quantities of drugs to trap them,” said Fernandes.
“The drug menace happening in Punjab will happen in Goa and I am saying this because I know of a family who personally contacted to inform about their hardships after their only son was into drugs. The family said that their only son would beat them up at home for money and we advised the family to inform the police about the story. The family said that after they informed the police, the drug peddlers reached their house before the police and were asking them, why and how the police were informed about the issue. This shows that some police are also hand in gloves with the drug peddlers and this is not a good sign for Goa,” said Fernandes.
