PANAJI: Former Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayors, Uday Madkaikar and Surendra Furtado walked out of the meeting overheated arguments on the National Theatre issue.
Today, the meeting began at 11 am on a stormy note witnessing heavy arguments between the ruling and opposition over the national theatre issue.
“The Mayor and his councillors are hand in gloves with builder lobby and want to sell the property. We will move to court seeking justice, the people of Panaji are watching; without proper hearing, how can CCP sell the said property,” said Madkaikar.
Surendra Furtado said that Panaji has never witnessed a Mayor such as Rohit and that the Monserrate family wants to finish off the capital city.
He further said that the contract staff are yet to receive their salaries and are upset with the mayor.
“CCP has been recruiting staff without proper means, we don’t have the funds, but still recruitments are being done; Babush has been putting in all people from Taleigao, People will give a befitting reply to this family in the coming elections,” he added.
The CCP had initiated proceedings to take possession of one of the oldest buildings in the capital – the National Theatre – located on its property. Based on legal opinion, the move came after that the lease agreement of 30 years with the Rao & Company expired in 2005. Once with CCP, the land will be used for multi-storey parking.
“The CCP is entitled to the property tax on the building, and hence if it is not imposed, it may be calculated and adjusted/collected from the compensation to be paid to Rao & Co by CCP,” CCP lawyer Advocate Promoy Kamat had said.
