New Delhi – Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov confirmed that discussions are underway between New Delhi and Moscow regarding the potential procurement of additional S-400 air defence systems. The move reflects the continued deepening of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
In an exclusive interaction with IANS, Ambassador Alipov praised the performance of Russian defence systems during India’s recent Operation Sindoor, calling both the S-400 air defence systems and the jointly-developed BrahMos missiles “exemplary.”
“From what we understand, India clearly defined its objectives during Operation Sindoor and successfully executed its mission. The S-400 air defence systems and BrahMos missiles were reportedly used, and their performance has been assessed as exemplary,” he said.
Strengthening Defence Ties
India and Russia share a long-standing and comprehensive defence partnership, governed by the Intergovernmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC). This partnership includes a range of joint projects, such as the licensed production of T-90 tanks and Su-30 MKI aircraft, the supply of MiG-29 and Kamov helicopters, the acquisition of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, and the domestic production of AK-203 rifles and BrahMos missiles.
What was once a traditional buyer-seller relationship has evolved into robust cooperation involving joint research, development, and co-production of advanced defence technologies.
More S-400 Systems on the Horizon?
Sources suggest that India may consider acquiring more S-400 systems to bolster its air defence capabilities, especially in light of their reported effectiveness during recent military operations. The S-400 has been credited with neutralizing several incoming threats during the latest India-Pakistan conflict escalation.
However, Ambassador Alipov refrained from confirming any deal. “Our discussions on this topic, as with many others, are ongoing. It would be incorrect and premature to comment on the outcomes at this stage,” he stated.
The S-400 Triumf is among the world’s most advanced long-range air defence systems, capable of tracking and targeting multiple aerial threats simultaneously. India had previously signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 for five S-400 regiments, deliveries for which began in late 2021.
