CANACONA: Speaker and Canacona MLA brokered a meeting between three concerned departments to augment the water supply from Gavnem dam for irrigation and domestic purposes to four of Canacona villages.
The all important meeting of all three departments Water Resource Department, PWD(Water-supply) and Agriculture department was coordinated on Saturday by Speaker of GLA & Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar.
The discussion centered around the lifting of water from Gavnem Dam which was constructed 7 years ago, but yet to be commissioned. The laying of major water supply pipeline work of Gavnem dam, water supply for domestic purpose as well as agricultural purpose to Gaondongrim panchayat, Paiguinim panchayat, Khotigao panchayat and Loliem-Polem panchayat areas were disccused.
Construction of a Barrage across Talpona river at Ordhofond were also discussed and issues pertaining to this major project approx 180 cr are resolved. Also, enhancement of storage capacity of Chapoli Dam is discussed, besides a proposal for a mini-dam at Karvem, tapping of agricultural activities in all four panchayat areas were also discussed.
Interestingly the new concept of a Barrage which is built for diverting water and at the same time raising the water –level by only a few feet is generally built on flat terrain across wide, often meandering rivers.
