Canacona: Minister for Tribal Welfare Ramesh Tawadkar led a delegation of Scheduled Tribe (ST) leaders from Goa to New Delhi to press for the early implementation of political reservation for Scheduled Tribes in the Goa Legislative Assembly under Article 332 of the Constitution of India.
The delegation, comprising prominent ST leaders along with Tawadkar, met Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal and submitted a detailed note seeking the immediate commencement of The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Act, 2025.
The Act, which was passed by Parliament and notified on August 13, 2025, following Presidential assent, provides for political reservation to Scheduled Tribes in Goa in line with constitutional provisions. However, the Act requires a separate notification specifying the appointed date for it to come into force.
During the meeting, the delegation urged the Central Government to issue this notification at the earliest, so that Scheduled Tribes in Goa can avail the benefits of political reservation in the forthcoming Goa Assembly Elections scheduled in 2027.
The Union Law and Justice Minister assured the delegation that their concerns would be examined and conveyed to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
