PANAJI: A day after Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar threatened to resign from the post expressing pain towards the treatment meted out to him by some of the cabinet ministers, the chief minister Pramod Sawant held meeting with Tawadkar trying to resolve the issue.
Sawant who was campaigning in Maharashtra met Tawadkar and heard his grievances with the latter pointing out how he was sidelined for a mega tribal event which was attended by CM and Govind Gaude.
Even BJP State President Sadanand Tanavade had a telephonic conversation with Tawadkar.
According to trustworthy sources, Tawadkar was also upset that he was not granted government funding to host a number of events from November 15–20 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the creator of tribal resilience.
Therefore, the Speaker threatened to resign due to the Art and Culture Minister’s comments at the UTAA conference in Farmagudi on Sunday and the lack of sufficient funding.
Tawadkar on Tuesday threatened to step down from the post, alleging constant disrespect by members of the ruling benches.
Addressing a press conference at Margao in South Goa, he accused “some ministers” in the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet of passing statements against him.
“I have always maintained the sanctity of the speaker’s post. I want other members to also respect it. If that does not happen, I will step down from the post,” he said.
The speaker added that some of the ministers in the Sawant-led cabinet were indulging in making unprovoked statements against him despite him being in the speaker’s post.
He represents the Canacona assembly constituency as a BJP MLA.
Tawadkar said that in the past as well, he had complained to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant that some of the ministers were not even receiving his phone calls.
