CANACONA: Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Arts & Culture, and Tribal Welfare Ramesh Tawadkar on Sunday called on migrant workers in Canacona to channel their skills into productive work and contribute to the development of the taluka, while warning contractors against any form of labour exploitation.
Addressing hundreds of daily wage labourers from across India at Ravindra Bhavan, Canacona, Tawadkar said, “All of you have come here to work hard and make your lives prosperous. Your first responsibility is to register your names properly at the local police station. Do not hand over your identity cards to anyone and avoid unnecessary trouble. The government will soon decide on uniform wage rates for workers in consultation with contractors, ensuring fair pay for your hard work.”
He further emphasized that any contractor found exploiting workers would face strict action. “Use your skills for productive work and contribute to the development of Canacona. Stay away from addictions, theft, drugs, and unlawful activities. Cooperate with the police and the local community to maintain peace and order,” Tawadkar added.
Canacona Police Inspector Harish Raut Dessai provided guidance on workplace safety, avoiding alcohol, adhering to traffic rules, seeking police assistance when needed, and maintaining law and order.
Local councillor Ramakant Naik Gaonkar and several contractors were also present at the meeting. The session concluded with workers sharing grievances and Tawadkar assuring them that appropriate action would be taken to address their concerns. The event ended with a vote of thanks by Sidharth Desai.
