Pernem: A 65-year-old taxi driver from Calangute sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a group of passengers near Malpem in Pernem late Wednesday night.
According to police sources, the victim, identified as Sanjeev Vengurlekar, was hired by four individuals for a trip from Calangute to Banda in Maharashtra. The incident occurred around 9 PM, when the vehicle reached the NH66 stretch near Malpem.
The passengers allegedly turned on the driver and attacked him with a sharp weapon. Despite suffering multiple injuries, Vengurlekar managed to resist the assailants and later sought medical assistance. He was subsequently rushed to Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Bambolim for treatment.
Acting on a complaint, Pernem Police traced the taxi abandoned along the highway and launched a search operation. Teams have been dispatched to Maharashtra in pursuit of the suspects.
Pernem Police Inspector Sachin Lokre confirmed that one person has been detained in connection with the assault. Further investigations are underway.
