PANAJI: The protest by traditional taxi operators in Goa against app-based taxi aggregators and rent-a-car services gained further momentum today as the Transport Department set up a special desk outside Junta House in Panaji to receive memorandums from taxi owners.
Taxi operators from various parts of the state arrived individually to submit their memorandums, expressing strong opposition to app-based taxi services. The submission process was carried out under the watch of a heavy police presence, indicating the high tensions surrounding the issue.
This follows recent meetings between taxi operators and political leaders, including Minister Babush Monserrate, who has called for a ban on rent-a-car and rent-a-bike services, and Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, who has assured operators he would take their concerns to Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant.
Taxi operators argue that aggregator platforms are hurting the livelihood of traditional drivers and demand immediate government intervention.
