Vasco: South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes has urged the Prime Minister to consider 15-year-old Nakshatra Nayak for the National Bravery Award, commending her courage during the violent armed dacoity at her home in Baina on November 18.
In his letter, Fernandes said Nakshatra showed remarkable presence of mind when seven armed dacoits forced their way into her family’s flat at Chamundi Arcade. The attackers, armed with iron rods, repeatedly assaulted her parents, Sagar and Harsha Nayak, leaving them seriously injured.
The MP noted that Nakshatra pleaded with the attackers to spare her parents and even offered them her piggy bank savings in a desperate attempt to stop the violence. When one of the dacoits swung an iron rod at her father, the teenager stepped between them and took the blow on her forearm.
After the gang fled, Nakshatra ran through the building knocking on doors to alert residents and seek immediate help. Her swift response ensured timely medical assistance for her parents and prevented a further delay that could have turned fatal.
Fernandes said the girl’s bravery has become a symbol of courage for young people across Goa. He has also written to the Chief Minister requesting the State’s support to forward her nomination to the Indian Council for Child Welfare, which selects recipients of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar.
The MP urged the Prime Minister to personally consider her nomination and added that the recognition, if announced during the PM’s visit to Goa on November 28, would inspire young citizens across the country.
