New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is expected to induct the first two Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets as early as October, significantly boosting its combat capabilities and advancing India’s goal of defence self-reliance. The induction will take place after successful weapon firing trials scheduled for later this month.
According to sources, the Tejas Mk-1A will undergo live firing tests for the Astra Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile, Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM), and precision laser-guided bombs. These trials will verify whether the new weapons have been seamlessly integrated with the Israeli-origin Elta ELM-2052 radar and fire-control system.
The upgrades follow software modifications made after previous trials faced integration challenges.
The Tejas Mk-1A fleet is powered by engines supplied by US-based General Electric (GE). HAL had placed an order for 99 GE-404 engines worth ₹5,375 crore in August 2021. Two engines have already been delivered, with 10 more expected by March 2026 and subsequent deliveries of 20 engines per year.
Technical issues related to weapon and radar integration had delayed production but are now being addressed, paving the way for smooth delivery.
The IAF has so far received 38 of the 40 Tejas Mk-1 jets ordered under earlier contracts worth ₹8,802 crore. Recently, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by the Prime Minister, cleared the procurement of 97 additional Tejas jets at a cost of ₹66,500 crore one of the biggest indigenous defence deals in recent years.
The induction comes at a critical time, as the IAF’s fighter strength is set to drop to 29 squadrons after the retirement of 36 ageing MiG-21 jets on September 26. The Tejas Mk-1A, equipped with modern weapons and advanced avionics, will help offset the shortfall and enhance operational readiness.
