MOPA: Mopa Airport Police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old man suspected to be involved in multiple temple thefts across Goa.
The arrest was made during night patrolling at Warkhand Junction around 3.15 am on September 7, police said. Police Inspector Narayan Chimulkar and his team noticed a man on a Splendor motorcycle (registration GA 03 E 9444) moving suspiciously.
Police said the man’s description matched CCTV footage from a temple theft reported at Shree Vetal Temple in Alorna on August 15. When officers approached him, the rider attempted to flee towards Dhargal but was chased and apprehended.
The accused has been identified as Bishnu Roy, son of Santosh Roy, originally from Dakshin Dinajpur, West Bengal, and currently residing in Dodamarg. Police found a backpack containing a pickaxe, screwdriver, and Rs 910 in small denominations, suspected to be stolen from temple donation boxes. The motorcycle was also found to be using a fake registration plate.
During questioning, Roy allegedly confessed to the Alorna temple theft and admitted involvement in similar incidents in other parts of Goa.
He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Viraj Sawant under the supervision of North Goa SP Rahul Gupta, Pernem SDPO Salim Shaikh, and PI Narayan Chimulkar.
