SANGUEM: Tense situation prevailed in Uguem Sanguem as the locals once again demanded the closure of laterite mines, which they said was posing a danger to the citizens of the villagers.
The people’s revolt started after the Mines Department official Dhananjay Kumar came to inspect the laterite quarry in Uguem.
The official said that he has come to conduct an inspection based on people’s complaints.
“I will submit the report to the department, and they will take a decision,” he said.
There was a huge police presence over the tense situation.
According to the villagers, the quarries affect the Uguem village due to blasting taking place in quarries in Ugem village.
Locals say that it is hardly 1 kilometre from the settlements.
One Uguem local, Melwyn, said that people are totally frustrated and angry with this situation as the authorities have not taken the issue seriously for the last five years.
He said people are now ready to come on the road as they are totally against querry activities that affect agriculture fields and mental peace.
“During the day, there is huge sound pollution, and most importantly, more than 60 houses, including the temple walls, are cracked due to vibrations,” he said.
Locals said the quarry is totally illegal because the lease is not renewed since 2013, the villagers totally blaming the authority for taking time in their decision.
