CANACONA: A tense atmosphere gripped the commercial hub of Chaudi in Canacona early Friday morning after two Pakistani flags were found painted on roads at two prominent locations. The incident, which has raised concerns of deliberate provocation, was first noticed by early morning walkers. One flag was discovered on the road to Ponsulem, just across the main Chaudi junction near the old bus stand opposite Krishna Café. The second was found near the Chatrapathi Shivaji Smarak at the entrance of the KTC Bus Terminus in Chaudi. Both flags were reportedly painted using oil paints and placed in high-visibility areas, sparking fears of an attempt to stir communal tensions in the otherwise peaceful taluka.
Sidharth Desai, Personal Assistant to the Speaker and one of the first to witness the incident during his morning walk at around 6:00 AM, immediately alerted Canacona MLA and Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar. Desai also informed Canacona Police Inspector Harishchandra Raut Desai. The Speaker has since sought a detailed report from the police and urged authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly to identify those responsible for what he termed a serious “misdemeanor” aimed at creating social unrest.
Desai expressed concern that this act may have been carried out by an organized group intent on provoking division and discord between communities in the region. “It is a clear indication that an unknown cell is attempting to disturb the communal harmony in Canacona,” he said, urging residents to stay calm and united. Meanwhile, several prominent citizens from different communities have condemned the act, appealed for peace, and called upon the police to take swift action to track down the culprits and bring them to justice under relevant laws.
