Jammu:
In a significant escalation of tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire agreement on Wednesday, prompting a robust response from the Indian Army. This incident, which occurred in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district, is particularly noteworthy as it follows the first major ceasefire violation of the year and marks the fourth cross-border incident in just five days.
The ceasefire breach came on the heels of a tragic event where two Indian Army personnel, including a captain, were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion near the LoC in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu district. This recent surge in hostile activities has heightened tensions along the LoC, underscoring the volatile security situation in the region.
On February 12, 2025, Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian posts in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district. The Indian Army responded swiftly and forcefully, resulting in heavy casualties among the Pakistani forces, although the exact numbers have not been confirmed. This strong retaliation was a direct response to the ceasefire violation, which is a rare occurrence since India and Pakistan renewed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021.
The ceasefire violation in the Tarkundi area along the LoC was part of a broader pattern of increased hostile activities from across the border. Just a day prior, two Indian Army personnel lost their lives in an IED explosion in the Akhnoor sector, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by Pakistan-backed terrorists and military actions.
In addition to the ceasefire violation, a junior commissioned officer (JCO) of the Indian Army sustained minor injuries when he accidentally stepped on a landmine in the same sector. The JCO, a resident of Mendhar, was part of a patrolling party tasked with monitoring the LoC to prevent terrorist infiltration. He was promptly evacuated to a military hospital for treatment.
The security situation in the region remains precarious, with multiple incidents reported in the past week. On Monday, a soldier was hit by a bullet while manning a forward post in the Kalal area of the Nowshera sector in Rajouri district. An Army patrol also came under terrorist fire from a forest across the LoC in Rajouri’s Keri sector on February 8. Furthermore, a land mine explosion on the night of February 4-5 resulted in casualties to terrorists attempting to infiltrate into the Indian side from the Krishna Ghati sector.
General Officer Commanding of the Jammu-based White Knight Corps, Lieutenant General Navin Sachdeva, recently reviewed the hostile activities along the LoC in Rajouri district on February 10. During his visit, he commended the troops for their vigilance and operational focus, urging them to remain prepared for all contingencies.
