Team Goemkarponn
Bicholim: Ona village in Maulinguem panchayat witnessed a tense situation when residents protested against a house survey being conducted by officials under police escort.
The survey team, led by the Mamlatdar and Talathi, had arrived unexpectedly in Ona village to carry out the survey as part of compliance with a court directive. However, the sudden visit without prior intimation sparked strong resistance from the villagers, who questioned the legality of the survey and demanded proper notice.
The confrontation escalated in the presence of a significant police contingent, heightening the tensions between officials and residents.
Mayem MLA Premendra Shet intervened promptly, arriving at the scene to calm the situation. He assured the villagers of his support and promised to provide legal assistance.
Following Shet’s intervention, the villagers agreed to disperse peacefully. The survey was called off and officials withdrew. The matter is scheduled for further consideration during a High Court hearing set for August 13.
