New Delhi: A terrorist was killed on Wednesday evening during an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district as part of an ongoing joint anti militancy operation. The clash took place after troops re established contact with a group of armed militants in the Dichhar area, where search teams had been tracking suspicious movement for several days.
The operation is being carried out by units of the Army along with Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force. Security officials stated that coordinated action by the forces led to the elimination of one militant, while efforts are continuing to locate others believed to be hiding in the surrounding forests. The region is known for its steep mountains and dense vegetation, making operations slow and challenging.
For several weeks, security agencies have been conducting an extensive drive to dismantle militant networks active in the Kishtwar and Chenab Valley belt. Patrols, area domination exercises and targeted searches have been increased after intelligence reports indicated the presence of a well armed group attempting to revive terror activities. Recent encounters in the area have already resulted in multiple neutralisations.
Investigators believe that some senior members of a banned outfit could be trapped in the current cordon. The group has been linked to a series of attacks and targeted killings in the past months, creating fear among local residents. Authorities are carefully advancing to avoid civilian harm while ensuring that escape routes are sealed.
The latest development comes at a time when security arrangements across Jammu and Kashmir have been strengthened due to an upcoming visit by the Union Home Minister. Additional checkpoints and surveillance measures have been introduced in major towns and sensitive locations to prevent any attempt to disturb public order.
On the same day, forces also launched a sudden cordon and search exercise in the Ab Guzar locality of Srinagar. All entry and exit points of the area were temporarily closed while teams checked residential and commercial premises. These preventive actions are part of a broader strategy to maintain peace and deter militant movement.
With the recent encounter, at least three terrorists have been killed in two separate operations within the last forty eight hours. Officials have reiterated that the campaign will continue until the remaining militants are traced and the region is made secure for local communities.
