QUEPEM: Goa is well known for its serene places, one of them is Dudhsagar Waterfall which is visited by the tourists and the Goans too. The waterfall is also surrounded by the places which are immensely beautiful.
One of them is an old dam or embankment which is located on the river Kushawati at Sonarbhat Quepem. This embankment was built during Portuguese reign in 1960, and has gained popularity for its scenic beauty in the monsoons.
Due to heavy rainfall in Goa for last three days, this embankment has reached its highest capacity and poses danger to the visitors.
This place is considered as an historical place as the construction of this embankment is marked during Portuguese rule in 1960 before Goa was liberated. This embankment is also used as the means to cross the river to reach Sonarbhatt, Quepem in summers by the locals, as it is considered as the shortest route.
Though this place is marked as historical and comes under WRD department, no proper care has been taken to maintain this beautiful place, this is what locals and the councilor are complaining about.
“WRD Department and Quepem Muncipality is doing nothing to preserve this place. The bridge which has to be crossed to reach the embankment is also about to collapse and is being ignored by the authorities” said Andie Fernandes, local of Sonarbhat.
“This place has lost its purity as many people dump garbage in this vicinity and also some mischievous activities like smoking and drinking are being practiced, which has polluted the area”, claimed Angelo Peixote, another local.
The Local municipality is not taking any responsibility to clean this place and due to which empty alcohol bottles are being seen, and the bushes around have not been removed since ages” complained a local Wilma Fernades.
Councilor Nandita Prabhudesai informed that the application for the same has been already given to the authorities to put sign boards in the area, which will prohibit throwing of garbage in the premise, but the higher authority of municipality has not done anything about it and is being faking about the installments of the Boards.
