PANAJI: With immediate effect, the Collector of Kolhapur has banned heavy vehicles from travelling between Goa and Belagavi via Tillari Ghat until October 31 due to the annual reports of landslides, heavy rains, and accidents.
The entry of the ghat will thus have low-height frames built on either side of it, along with signboards prohibiting the entry of heavy and multi-axle vehicles.
Heavy vehicles from Maharashtra’s other regions, including Belagavi, will have to pass through Chorla, Anmod, or Amboli.
Amol Yedage, the Kolhapur Collector, issued a ban order prohibiting the movement of heavy and multi-axle vehicles on SH 189 between Km 155/00 and Km 163/00.
It should be mentioned that this ghat is extremely narrow and often sees accidents. Heavy traffic should avoid the ghat because of its sharp turns and ups and downs, which make it impossible for cars to turn at road bends. This has led to numerous significant mishaps in the ghat.
Vehicles become stuck on sharp turns in the ghat due to heavy traffic, making it challenging to remove the vehicle with a crane. Crane accidents have also occurred, particularly when larger cranes must be used.
Nonetheless, a number of drivers travel this route since Google Maps indicates that it is the only, closest, and best-maintained route connecting Belagavi and Goa.
Since this is a new route, drivers are unable to anticipate the ghat, which leads to accidents. Motorcycles and other four-wheeled vehicles find it more difficult to manoeuvre as a result.
