PANAJI: In a groundbreaking event, the Guirim Free Legal Aid Cell of V.M. Salgaocar College of Law brought disability and child rights to the forefront with their program “Beyond Barriers.” Held on March 22, 2025, the initiative drew over 100 attendees, including members of the mahila mandal, children, and the general public, to engage in crucial discussions about inclusivity and empowerment.
Former District & Sessions Judge Sayonara Telles-Laad, now serving as an Adjudicating officer at Goa RERA, headlined the event with her expertise on child protection. Telles-Laad emphasized the significance of Goa’s Children’s Court and the child welfare committee in combating issues such as child abuse, online grooming, and statutory rape.
Advocate Krunal Kiran Thakur, spokesperson for the Commissioner of Disability Office and Social Welfare Ministry, addressed the audience on disability rights. Thakur stressed the importance of treating persons with disabilities with dignity and respect, while encouraging them to access available government schemes and benefits.
The program covered a wide range of topics, including early intervention centers, medical facilities, disability certificates, education, and job opportunities for persons with disabilities. Attendees also learned about the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, with pamphlets distributed to inform the audience about schemes available for differently-abled individuals.
Assistant Professor Siddesh Tari of V.M. Salgaocar College of Law and Sandhya Shetye, chairperson of the Mahila Mandal, lent their support to the event, further highlighting its significance within the community.
The success of “Beyond Barriers” has inspired student organizer Miss Jochele Correia to propose expanding the initiative into a larger project, aiming to create an even greater impact on disability and child rights awareness in Goa.
