New Delhi: Former India hockey captain Manpreet Singh has dismissed speculation that his absence from the national core group was linked to any disciplinary issue, stating that he had personally sought time away from the game to rest and spend time with his family. The clarification came after the 33 year old was left out of the core group of 33 probables for the first time in nearly 15 years, triggering widespread discussion within the hockey fraternity.
Addressing the issue through social media, Manpreet explained that the decision was mutually agreed upon with the coaching staff following an intense and uninterrupted playing schedule since the Paris Olympics. He said the past year had involved continuous competition, with back to back tournaments across Asia, Europe, Australia, and South Africa, leaving little time for recovery.
Manpreet highlighted that the demanding calendar coincided with a major personal milestone, as he and his wife welcomed their second daughter last year. With national camps and international commitments following one after another, he felt the need to step back briefly to regain balance and energy. He said the coaching staff understood the situation and supported his request for a short break.
The veteran midfielder emphasised that the time away would allow him to focus on family while also helping him recover mentally and physically. He expressed confidence that the break would enable him to return stronger and contribute effectively to the team in the future. Manpreet also thanked Hockey India and the coaching staff for accommodating his request and extended his best wishes to the national side for the upcoming Pro League fixtures.
Hockey India recently announced the list of probables for the forthcoming season, which also did not include forward Dilpreet Singh and goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak. The Pro League campaign is set to begin next month, with matches scheduled in Rourkela.
Despite his temporary absence, Manpreet remains a central figure in Indian hockey. He recently co captained Ranchi Royals to the Hockey India League final, earning praise for his leadership and on field performances. He is also just one international appearance away from equalling Birendra Lakra’s record of 412 caps for India, underlining his longevity and importance to the sport.
The India leg of the FIH Pro League will be held in Rourkela from February 10 to 15, with the host nation set to open its campaign against Argentina on February 11.
