CANACONA: A three metre long Cobra (female) was rescued from a residential area at Peddem-Loliem on Monday morning.
The Forest Department Rescuers from Hathipal, Khotigao Harischandra Chodankar and Gautham Bhagat carried out the rescue operations when informed about the sighting of the King Cobra, threateningly moving around the residential locality near the Peddem Chapel in Loliem village.
Initially, it was sighted by a motorcyclist who saw it crossing the road, and soon after it crossed the road, it slipped into a roadside hole, as dogs around started to barking menacingly. At first people tried to ignore it thinking it to some non-poisonous and unharmed snake, but some preferred to inform the forest officials regarding the sightings, even as the motorcyclist maintained it to be Cobra.
Soon two of the forest rescuers arrived, and while the Cobra came out of the hole, one of therescuers caught hold to its tail, and after taming it for some minutes, guided it to enter a cotton-bag especially borught by the rescuers.
Before taking away, the forest rescuers informed the snake is a king cobra and it’s a female reptile and three meters long in size.
According to residents, the cobra was seen a few more times, taking away livestock from the residential areas, and was considered a threat to the people particularly children living in the locality.
Even as the rescuers leaving, another neighbour reported sighting of another poisonous snake of similar type moving in the locality. The Rescuers stating it could be the male partner of the Cobra, requested the locals to alert them, whenever it is sighted again, the forest rescuers left with the booty of the female cobra.
