Panaji: The long-pending canal lining work along the Tillari irrigation project is finally set to begin in November–December this year, with the Water Resources Department (WRD) allocating ₹9.75 crore for the task.
Confirming the development, WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar said the work order has already been issued. “The delay was due to the Exposition event last year. Now that the administrative hurdles are cleared, we expect physical work to begin by the end of the year,” he stated.
Shirodkar also indicated that the department is open to adopting new technology in the future to enhance canal durability. “We will explore better methods for canal lining to improve water conservation and reduce losses,” he added.
Meanwhile, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral said the current practice of basic concrete patching is not sustainable. “Such patching won’t last long. We need to invest in modern canal lining technology that ensures long-term efficiency and minimal maintenance,” Cabral asserted.
The canal forms a crucial part of Goa’s irrigation and water distribution network under the Goa State Retention (GSR) scheme, and both leaders agreed that technology upgrades will be key in ensuring water efficiency for the future.
