CANACONA: A drone survey has been conducted to assess the condition of a dangerously tilted storage tank containing over 20-year-old molasses at a long-defunct alcohol factory in the Canacona Industrial Estate.
The aerial footage, captured on Friday, has been submitted to the Canacona Deputy Collector, who also heads the Taluka Disaster Management Authority. A structural stability test is also underway and expected to be submitted shortly, sources informed.
The urgent survey was ordered after a joint inspection by the Canacona Deputy Collector, Mamlatdar, officials from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and representatives of NTS Pvt. Ltd — the firm that owns the industrial plot. The tank has dangerously tilted to one side, raising fears of collapse or leakage.
A strong odour from the decaying molasses has already begun affecting nearby units, including a car workshop. Locals fear that even a minor leak could result in the toxic substance spreading into adjacent industrial plots and eventually reaching the nearby rivulets and the Talpona River, causing severe environmental damage.
