New Delhi: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday announced that he will personally take charge of preparations for the 2026 27 State Budget, following the passing of Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar. The move is aimed at maintaining administrative continuity and financial stability during a sensitive period for the state government.
Fadnavis said Ajit Pawar had already completed most of the groundwork for the upcoming budget and had been closely involved in shaping its priorities. Emphasising the need to honour his efforts, the Chief Minister stated that he would oversee the remaining work to ensure that the vision and planning laid down by Pawar are carried forward without disruption. He added that the process would begin immediately, while a decision on who will eventually present the budget in the legislature will be taken at a later stage.
The sudden loss of Ajit Pawar has led to speculation over the budget process and leadership responsibilities within the government. Addressing these concerns, Fadnavis clarified that there is no administrative vacuum and that the state’s financial planning will proceed smoothly. He reiterated that the government remains fully committed to stability and governance during this transition.
The Chief Minister also assured strong political support to the Nationalist Congress Party and Ajit Pawar’s family. He stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party and the state government will stand firmly with the NCP during this period. According to Fadnavis, any decision taken by the NCP regarding its future leadership or the role of Pawar’s family will be respected by the ruling alliance.
On the question of filling the Deputy Chief Minister’s post, Fadnavis confirmed that discussions are ongoing. He said senior NCP leaders have held meetings with him to discuss internal procedures and available options, but stressed that the final decision rests solely with the party.
Fadnavis also spoke about the pending mayoral elections in Mumbai, Nagpur, and other cities. He said consultations within the MahaYuti alliance are underway and that final decisions on candidates will be taken in the coming days after discussions with local leaders and elected representatives.
