PANAJI: The Goa Tourism Department has ordered the immediate temporary suspension of Shack No. 16 at the Calangute Umtavaddo beach stretch following a violent assault on tourists from Bengaluru.
The action comes after a report submitted by the Tourist Police Unit regarding an incident on March 24, 2026, in which shack employees allegedly attacked visitors. According to officials, the staff used iron rods and sharp objects during the assault, causing grievous injuries and triggering panic in the crowded beach area.
Preliminary investigation also revealed that the shack management, including individuals identified as Stanley Coutinho and Rohit, allegedly participated directly in the assault. Police have noted that both individuals have prior criminal records at Calangute Police Station.
Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte strongly condemned the incident, stating that such acts should not happen in Goa. He said Goa believes in “Atithi Devo Bhava” and such behaviour goes against the state’s hospitality ethos. He added that police have already initiated action and strict steps will be taken to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
Director of Tourism Kedar Naik said the conduct amounts to a grave violation of the Goa State Shack Policy and the Goa Tourist Places Protection and Maintenance Act. He stated that the use of weapons in a major international tourist destination like Calangute is unacceptable and damages Goa’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.
The Tourism Department has summoned the licence holder, Francisco Rosario, for a formal hearing scheduled on March 30, 2026. Authorities said further penalties, including permanent cancellation of the licence and forfeiture of security deposit, are under consideration.
The government reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards activities that endanger tourists and said strict action will be taken against operators who compromise safety and tourism standards.
