CANACONA: The notification issued by the South Goa District Collector has banned most of the activities due to the threat of the spread of Covid-19 virus but at the Bamonbudo waterfall in Gaondongrem its opposite as the police are failing to control the surging crowds who are seen throwing caution to wind and breaking the Covid-19 protocol in it’s real sense.
Come monsoon the seasonal water falls in Canacona come to life throwing one of the best breathtaking sights and gushing water which merry makers come to enjoy.
Over the frequent complains from locals against the fun seekers of vandalising these otherwise pristine unspoilt areas the police used to deploy a huge force not to allow entry of people with hard drinks since last few years.
And presently with no fun and frolic due to the Covid-19 curfew restrictions the locals are finding this as a perfect outlet to vent out their frustration and trying to get some fun in this times.
With no entertainment of any sort and no where to go for a holiday fun seekers feel that they need this activity as they are already in depressed mode.
Locals say that more than hundred merry makers descend on weekends in Gaondongrem which hosts Bamonbudo and Bupar, two of the best waterfalls in the taluka and the two police constables deputed at the water falls are in no way able to stop these people from gathering so close to each other.
Covid19 SOPs are not followed at all and no one wears mask locals informed.
Both the places where these waterfalls are located are sacred places and the visitors are vandalising the surroundings here as they openly indulge in alcoholism and discard the glass bottles and plastic at the waterfront locals complained.
The approach roads to both these waterfalls are narrow and the haphazard parking of two and four wheelers by them is creating a nuisance to the local as well as to other road users say locals.
After uproar from the locals of these unruly visitors causing nuisance in the village the police had strictly banned entry of outsiders at the waterfalls but the two policemen now deployed at the waterfalls can hardly handle such a huge crowd said a local person from Gaondongrem.
Normally, there used to be a huge pose of police to disallow visitors to these waterfalls but this year there are only two policemen, the police station in charge has to look into this otherwise it might lead to a law and order problem, the local added.
Some visitors after getting high on the drink, dance on the road with much of their clothes off, some even go to the extent of passing lewd comments on local women, all these has to be stopped by police another local said.
With third wave at the door steps it is in the best interest of everyone to disallow such gatherings and spare the locals of the nuisance created by the unruly visitors, police have to step up and stop these activities, said Kust Gaonkar deputy sarpanch of Gaondongrem panchayat.
