VARCA: A video showing a parasailing parachute tangled in a coconut tree at Varca Beach went viral on Thursday afternoon, sparking widespread concern over water sports safety standards. In response, the Tourist Police swiftly initiated an inquiry to verify the facts and review safety measures followed by local operators.
A team led by Police Inspector Jatin Potdar visited Varca around noon on Thursday to assess the situation firsthand. According to sources, the team has since submitted a detailed report on the incident to the Department of Tourism.
PI Potdar said that preliminary findings indicate the mishap occurred when the parachute attached to a water sports boat became entangled in a coconut tree located near a beach shack during a demonstration or trial run.
He clarified that no tourists or customers were involved at the time of the incident. The boat was reportedly operated by a driver named Rathod, a native of Gadag, Karnataka, who holds a valid licence issued by the Government of India.
Following the site visit and initial inquiries, the Tourist Police have urged the Tourism Department to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the Varca water sports zone to ensure safe and regulated operations.
When contacted, Colva Police confirmed that the incident falls strictly under the jurisdiction of the Tourist Police and that their station has no role in the ongoing investigation.
