SIOLIM: In yet another case highlighting rash driving by tourists on Goan roads, a woman and her young child sustained injuries after a Thar jeep allegedly driven by tourists rammed into their two-wheeler at Siolim-Marna on Wednesday evening.
Eyewitnesses said the speeding Thar hit the scooter from behind, knocking the woman and child onto the road. The tourists reportedly tried to flee the scene, but alert locals gave chase and managed to stop the vehicle.
Residents at the spot claimed several beer bottles were found inside the jeep, raising suspicion that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. However, police said the matter was later settled amicably between both parties and no formal case was registered.
A police official confirmed that the tourist driver was at fault due to negligent driving. Authorities had initially intended to book the driver for rash and negligent driving but refrained after both sides reached a compromise.
The incident has reignited public concern over unsafe and reckless driving by visiting tourists, particularly in coastal areas like Anjuna, Vagator, and Siolim, where such accidents have become increasingly frequent.
Local residents have urged police to intensify patrolling and strictly enforce traffic laws, especially against drunk and rash driving, to ensure road safety for both locals and visitors.
