CANACONA: Canacona Police have registered a case of cheating after an unknown person allegedly duped a local trader of ₹1.08 lakh by posing as an engineer of a construction firm and showing a fake payment message.
The complaint was filed by Ganpatlal Choudhri, a resident of Canacona. According to police, the incident occurred on November 29, 2025, at around 6.10 pm at the complainant’s shop located opposite the KTC bus stand near Bhavani Electronics, Chaudi, Canacona.
Police said the unknown accused contacted the complainant using a mobile phone, impersonating an engineer from M/s Pooja Construction, and placed an order for Polycab cables worth ₹1,08,670. The accused later sent a screenshot of a text message showing a fake payment of the said amount, inducing the complainant to believe that the payment had been made.
Subsequently, one person arrived at the shop in a black Swift Dzire car and collected the Polycab cables. Later, the accused messaged the complainant claiming that the NEFT transaction had failed due to an incorrect IFSC code and assured that the payment would be made the next morning. However, no payment was received till date.
Canacona Police have registered a case for cheating, and further investigation is being carried out by PSI Babu Dessai.
