CALANGUTE: BJP Calangute MLA Michael Lobo claimed that rather than taking action to prevent accidents, the Traffic Police were giving priority to issuing tickets for moving infractions.
Lobo urged the need for action in accident-prone areas and voiced concerns about the state’s increasing accident rate.
“In addition to a lack of traffic sign boards, unpainted speed breakers, and uneven roads, accidents are occurring as a result of reckless and careless driving. People’s lives are more important, Lobo added, and officers and local authorities should make sure that all these things are done correctly.
“Tight measures ought to be implemented. These actions are being taken by the Traffic Police in order to cite violators of the law. They are occupied with issuing tickets for seat belt infractions, unauthorised entry, etc,”
They take action against the public by standing in such locations where “No Entry” signs are not clearly visible, Lobo added.
“They aim to complete 50 challenges a day in order to demonstrate that the directives issued by authorities must be followed. Every traffic cell has been assigned a goal, and in order to reach that goal, traffic cells are releasing challenges. This is unacceptable,” Lobo continued.
MLA Lobo had earlier claimed that the state should cease harassing tourists by stopping the imposition of fines by the Traffic Police, as this would send the wrong message.
