USGAO: A fun outing turned tragic on Sunday afternoon when two young men drowned in the river at Usgaon-Ganje during a recreational water activity. Two others, who were trapped midstream, were rescued in a coordinated effort by emergency response teams.
The group had ventured to the river for water-based adventure activities, unaware of the potential dangers posed by the river’s depth and unpredictable flow. The situation escalated when the water level surged unexpectedly, catching the youths off guard. In the sudden rush of water, two individuals were swept away by the powerful current. Two others managed to hold onto a rock formation in the middle of the river to avoid being pulled under.
Upon receiving information about the incident, authorities acted swiftly. To facilitate rescue efforts, the sluice gates of a nearby dam were temporarily adjusted to reduce the water flow, allowing the fire and emergency services to reach the stranded individuals and bring them to safety.
The two victims who tragically lost their lives in the incident have been identified as Dhananjay Khairnar and Lavpreet. By Sunday evening, one of the bodies had been recovered, while the search operation for the second remained ongoing at the time of reporting.
This unfortunate incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of unsupervised water activities in natural water bodies, especially during the pre-monsoon season when sudden water releases and strong currents are common. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid entering rivers without proper safety measures.
