SATTARI: In a shocking incident, a 23 year old drowned at Tonir water in Sanvordem Sattari. The dead body was recovered today.
As per information, the deceased has been identified as Pradeep Kumar (23) n/o Rajasthan.
Information revealed that Pradeep Kumar along with 3 others had gone for picnic at waterfall under guidance of a local tour operator, however Kumar failed to wear life jacket and drowned.
“Our team, when learnt about the incident, immediately went to the site and launched a search operation, however, we did not find him till late evening,” said a fireman from Valpoi fire station.
Locals, however, expressed concern over rising number of such incidents at the waterfall sites in Sattari. They said police personnel need to be deployed at such spots to keep an eye on visitors.
Locals also said that there is also a need to install sign boards warning against venturing into deep pools at the base of the falls and other risky areas.
The government wants to bet big on hinterland tourism, however absence of sound and systematic model of eco-tourism will result in chaos.
Coupled with the fact that there are no meaningful curbs on misbehaviour and drinking by rowdy visitors, the idea of hinterland tourism would remain stillborn. Strict monitoring is required to prevent fatalities at places which are meant to be enjoyed.
Since 2022, six drowning deaths have taken place at waterfalls across Goa.
