New Delhi: On the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid homage to the millions affected by the 1947 partition of India, calling it one of the most “tragic chapters” in the nation’s history.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister lauded the grit and resilience of those who endured unimaginable loss yet rebuilt their lives from scratch.
“India observes #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit… their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh,” PM Modi wrote.
He highlighted that many survivors, despite the trauma of violence and displacement, went on to achieve remarkable milestones. The day, he stressed, serves as a reminder of the nation’s responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold India together.
The partition of 1947 witnessed one of the largest mass migrations in human history, uprooting millions and leaving behind a legacy of violence and displacement.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his tribute, recalled the pain of those who suffered during the partition while blaming the Congress for “dividing the nation and hurting the pride of Mother India.”
“#PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay is a day to express condolences by remembering the pain of those who suffered due to the partition… The country will never forget this history and pain,” Shah posted in Hindi.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid his respects, calling the partition a “painful chapter” that claimed countless lives and destroyed livelihoods.
“Even today, every Indian feels empathy for those affected families. We are fully committed to further strengthening social harmony in the country,” he said.
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, reaffirming the nation’s collective memory of 1947 and its pledge to preserve unity in diversity.
